Danbury was platted in 1883 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was extended to that point. The village was named after Danbury, Connecticut, the hometown of an early settler. The economy of Danbury is based on agriculture, with corn, soybeans, and alfalfa being the major crops.

The village has a public elementary school, Danbury Public School, which serves students in grades K-6. After 6th grade, students attend middle and high schools in neighboring communities.
